One of the gigs just before Christmas gave me the excuse to talk about a bit of kit I've used quite a bit over the last year or so. I already said that I took a PA rig over to Lowestoft and didn't have to use it, as they had one in the venue. Who'd be a soundman? I did end up using our own monitor system though, as well as our own desk (one we hire from MSL - the company who do all Jools Holland's shows). The desk is a Yamaha M7CL. It's hard to argue with them, anyway.  And as that's the amount of people who downloaded Digidesign Pro Tools 7.4 in its first 25 days of release, Audiotechnews won't even bother. AKG announce new microphones

AKG have a new microphone designed for women. More specifically, its frequency response is tailored to respond to the characteristics the female voice. Presumably the Elle C is going to be used by a spice girl. Fewer women employed than men in AV

It's good to see that the University of Salford are making use of their time with the Women in Audio Visual Engineering project (WAVE) They've done a survey to find out why more women don't work in the AV sector. They've spent 12 months on this. "Typically, audio-video jobs involve working at night in either a freelance role or for a small company" said WAVE project leader Dr Haifa Takruri-Rizk, of the University of Salford's school of computing, science and engineering.
